The San Joaquin Valley Colony of Mayflower Descendants of CA 2019-20

Scholarship competition information:

The SJV Colony of the Mayflower Descendants offers College scholarships to qualifying student on a competitive basis.  Scholarships will be awarded as follows: $500.00 First Place, $250 Second Place.  The two scholarships offered each year are chosen based on quality, creativity, scholarship and accuracy.  Key qualifications that must be met in order to be considered for SJV Mayflower Colony Scholarship:

Scholarship Essay:  “What characteristics of the Mayflower passengers and crew are still valuable today?  Utilize memories and stories of your Mayflower descendants to make your point.  Essay should be 1200+ words. (Be sure to tell us about yourself, including your interests and goals.)

Letters of Recommendation:  1) Parent or grandparent whose direct lineage qualifies the student for completion. Be sure to include your/their CA #.  There is NO restriction regarding the residence of the California Mayflower Society member or the residence of the scholarship applicant. 2) A letter of recommendation from a teacher

Qualifications: Scholarships shall be awarded annually to graduating college bound high school senior, good grade point average (submit a copy of applicant’s transcript) who has a verifiable direct lineage connection with a San Joaquin Valley Colony member in good standing.

Applications are accepted with an accompanying essay on a particular topic chosen each year by the SJV Colony Board.  This topic may change annually.

Please submit the following to be considered in the 2020 competition:

  • Scholarship Application (includes Scholarship Essay)
  • Letters of recommendation
    • 1) Direct lineage parent/grandparent
    • 2) Letter of recommendation from a teacher
  • Copy of applicant’s high school transcript

Deadline: Send all completed documents to the attention of the Larry Beston, “Scholarship Committee Chair”.  All documents must be received no later than March 2, 2020 in order to be placed in completion.  No late or incomplete applications will be accepted.  Email all documents to  You may also mail the completed documents to be received no later than March 2, 2020: Larry Beston, SJVC Scholarship Committee Chair, 57 Minarets Ave, Clovis, CA 93611.  The winners will be recognized at the May, 2020 SJVC meeting, if they are available to attend.  Attendance is not mandatory in order to receive the scholarship.
